"As you approach the gorillas you tell them that you're there and you use a
sound that they use to keep in touch. That is known as a bv, that stands for
belch vocalisation because people thought they were just burping at first, then
they realised they were actually saying something. So as you approach you say "hhmmhhmmaa"
and that will just say I’m over here and I'm OK where are you? And if you do it
well then sometimes you can get a round of bvs as the other members of the
family respond and say well I'm over here, I'm OK and so you just sort of settle
in.'

Making Friends because Gorillas listen.
"You use the sort of sounds that they make when they're happy and contented, so
when gorillas are feeding, the sun is shining they 've got lots of wild celery
they're peeling the celery, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, chomping away.
Sometimes you'll hear them start going hmmm, hmmm, chomp, chomp, and they're
sitting closing they're eyes enjoying the sun and the food. That's a contentment
sound, so as you approach them if you sing to them in that hmmoah, hmooah then
that will tell them that there's no danger, and when the kids are playing they
chase and they laugh because when young gorillas and chimps play with each other
they tickle each other, and you hear an awful lot of hah hhaa, hhaah, with
gorillas."

"It's not with the fists, gorillas chest beat with open hands. A male gorilla
has this huge chest and unlike human males that start to grow hair on their
chest when they reach puberty, gorilla males lose the hair on their chest, so
they've got bare skin, When they hit the chest with the cupped hand, just
beneath the pectoral muscle it makes a sort of a pop sound like that, so you'll
hear this hoot series - a sort of a hoot, hoot, hooot hoo, hoo hoo, bash bash
bash."
